ABOUT EMILY
At age 15, Pianist/Composer/Songwriter Emily Bear is one of the most astonishing and prolific musical talents of our time – arranging, orchestrating, and performing in an astonishingly (remarkable) diverse collection of styles. Having made her professional debut at the Ravinia Festival at 5 years old, she has since performed at many of the worlds’ most well-known venues including Carnegie Hall, the White House, Lincoln Center, Montreux Jazz Festival, Blue Note, Ravinia, and the Hollywood Bowl, among others. Her concerts have taken her to concert halls across the U.S. and Europe and Asia and her love for all musical styles ranges from pop, classical, jazz, and everything in between. Lately, she has been singing and writing all genres of pop music with many of the top songwriters and producers in the industry.

At age 6, Emily was the youngest to ever receive the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award and symphonies all over the world have performed her original orchestral pieces. She is the 2016 recipient of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Jazz Composer of the Year Award and the 2015 Young Composer of the Year Award for concert music. She recently was commissioned to arrange an original composition performed by 25 pianos at the same time for Street Piano’s Mesa.

Establishing herself as a classical artist, she performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto, no. 23 K488 at the age of 7. Other pieces in her concerto repertoire include the Schumann Piano Concerto, Rhapsody In Blue by Gershwin, and the Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor. Her love for jazz has taken her from the famous hall of the Montreux Jazz Festival to Blue Note Tokyo, Dizzy's at Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Blue Note in NYC - where she premiered original music she composed for Big Band Jazz Orchestra.

Emily also loves composing for film and TV and composed the music for 6 national commercials for Weight Watchers 'Simple Start' campaign. Emily has released 6 CDs of original music, with her most recent CD, Diversity, produced by Quincy Jones for Concord Music. “She’s the most delightful human being I’ve ever met in my life”, Quincy says. “And her music is the same way. I am at once astounded and inspired by the enormous talent that Emily embodies. With the ability to seamlessly move from Classical to Jazz and Be-Bop, she shows as much musical prowess as pianists/composers twice her age, and I am thrilled to be working with her. Emily has been composing since she was 3 years old. By the time she was 4, she was having music published and distributed by Hal Leonard and currently has 5 original sheet music songbooks distributed worldwide. Emily has helped raise millions for charities across the globe through performances and events. Each of her CD's and songbooks dedicate a portion of sales to various charities. A documentary on Emily has attracted almost 30 million views on YouTube and won an Emmy Award. Emily appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show 6 times in 2 years, performing an original song she composed for each appearance. She has been featured nationally and internationally on TV and print including the Disney Channel, ABC Nightline, Katie Couric Show, Queen Latifah Show, Dancing With the Stars, Good Morning America, Australia Sunday Night Channel 7, Germany SAT1, and others. Emily was interviewed for NPR Radio by David Green that was selected for a CD collection of NPR's top stories: "People We Meet: Unforgettable Conversations."

Emily and her family live in Illinois where in her free time, she loves to wakeboard and volunteer at local animal shelters.

At only 15-years-old, pianist/composer Emily Bear has achieved the kinds of accolades and triumphs that take many artists a lifetime to accomplish. She's performed at the most prestigious venues across the country and around the world, received numerous awards and honors, composed for film and television, made six appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, garnered 30 million views on YouTube, played at the White House, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, been mentored by the legendary Quincy Jones - and that's only a partial list. 

Now, with the release of Into the Blue, Bear brings us new original jazz compositions performed with her trio. The album comprises five of her original compositions plus a warm, graceful take on "My Favorite Things" that hints at the immortal John Coltrane version before veering off into dazzling variations. Exuding Bear's own exuberant passion for music, Into the Blue is both accessible and appealing for listeners of any age. 

Bear follows the chart topping success of her first album, Diversity--produced by her long time mentor, Quincy Jones--with this inspiring collection of new melodies. Her agility on the piano is matched by her skill in creating stylistic compositions - catchy, intelligent, and sophisticated.

Bear has composed and arranged for orchestra, written for film and commercials.  And while she continues to expand her musical palette, jazz holds a special place in her heart. "What I love so much about jazz is that you have a lot more freedom than in classical music," Bear says. "Jazz has a groove that doesn't show up in any other kind of music and I enjoy using all my musical influences to create a unique sound, familiar yet new." 

Throughout Into the Blue, Bear expresses herself joyfully and elegantly, clearly thriving on the interplay with her gifted trio-mates: Bulgarian-born bassist Peter Slavov--a member of Joe Lovano's Us Five band--and Toronto native Mark McLean--who has worked with George Michael, Billy Joel and Michael Feinstein--on drums. Bear was introduced to Slavov through famed producer Quincy Jones when she was just eight years old, and McLean joined in three years ago, solidifying a profoundly interactive and celebratory line-up. "They're amazing musicians and they can jump back and forth between a lot of the styles that I write," she enthuses about her bandmates. "On top of that, they're really great guys." 

Into the Blue opens with "Old Office," a piece that won Bear a Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award from the ASCAP Foundation in 2016. Named for the New York City rehearsal room in which it was composed, "Old Office" moves with an alluring groove that Bear digs deeply into with an eloquent, deftly weaving solo. The gentle sway of "Je Ne Sais Pas" follows, a tune that spotlights the delicate, sensitive dynamics of the trio. "Indigo," captures the translucent melancholy of the piece in a single word. 

The shimmering "Araignee" is adapted from Bear's score for an animated film about a game of one-upmanship between two French spiders crafting increasingly elaborate webs inspired by great artworks. The final original, "Tiger Lily," is highlighted by the lively rhythmic dance between Bear and McLean. The album closes with the aforementioned "My Favorite Things," a longtime favorite through which Bear displays her unique blend of wisdom and innocence - she's a musical old soul who retains a sense of wonder more befitting her age.   

Into the Blue is dedicated to Quincy Jones, who discovered the young pianist when she was seven, taking her under his wing and producing her debut studio album, Diversity. In her dedication, Bear calls him a "constant inspiration as a musician and a person," and expands on that notion by referring to Jones as "one of the biggest influences in my life. We connect because he shares the same kinds of musical passions as me - he's done every style of music in every possible scenario. Quincy is a walking encyclopedia of music, but he's also the most down to earth, sweetest person I've ever met."

"It's so much fun to collaborate and communicate with the other musicians," she says. "I really enjoyed creating the songs for Into The Blue and bringing together all my musical influences to create a new sound in jazz. It is an incredible feeling that you can't get anywhere else."

Most 15-year-olds are running around at the mall, wasting precious time. If they play a musical instrument, it’s usually in high school band, because all their friends are playing clarinet or trumpet, and it sure beats taking art, standup, or heaven forbid, guitar 101.

Emily Bear isn’t like most 15-year-olds. She’s a seriously talented musician who stands out from a crowd the second she runs her fingers over the keys.

A highly evolved, deeply musical prodigy, Bear has a new album coming out Jan. 27 on Edston Records called Into The Blue, dedicated to mentor Quincy Jones, who first discovered her when she was seven. What’s even more amazing is that this isn’t even her first jazz album. Diversity is. The Sept. 7, 2013 debut was produced by Jones, and quickly topped the charts.

Jones quickly discovered the monster player in Bear, who can do it all: jazz, blues, R&B/pop vocal (stay tuned for Remember), classical, orchestral, commercial TV. But jazz, ah jazz is her forte.

“What I love so much about jazz is that you have a lot more freedom than in classical music. Jazz has a groove that doesn't show up in any other kind of music and I enjoy using all my musical influences to create a unique sound, familiar yet new,” Bear said in a recent DL Media press release.

For Into The Blue, Bear’s with a killer bassist and drummer: Bulgarian-born Peter Slavov (Joe Lovano’s Us Five) and Toronto native Mark McLean (George Michael, Billy Joel). They can clearly hang with her through some thick, dense movements and style variations.

“They’re amazing musicians and they can jump back and forth between a lot of the styles that I write. On top of that, they’re really great guys,” she said in the press release.

The first two tracks in advance of the release bear little resemblance to any teen, even a gifted one. A piano player and composer, Bear shows the sophistication of a studied, established veteran with a flair for musical drama in her confident, unctuous chord strides, classically executed takes on tone, structure, and phrasing that most experienced adults can’t even maneuver.

“Old Office” and “Je Ne Sais Pas” vaguely reference the jazz odes of old without leaving the modern behind. Every note is clean, crisp, smart, and almost flippantly tossed, as if to say, “Yeah, I know it, and watch this next!”

Bear almost pounds those notes for effect in “Old Office,” which won her a “Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award” from the ASCAP Foundation in 2016. The frenetic control of the performance is possessed of an urgency and whirlwind energy that cannot be contained yet must be conveyed in a passing fashion, for the ultimate statement. Her runs are as quick as a heart beat pounding the pavement of a big city, searching windows for that big break.

Where “Old Office” is a swanky, luxe affair, “Je Ne Sais Pas” cleverly lets slip with other stylistic touches from the curvy classically enhanced jazz of her piano opening into the syncopated percussive luster of the bass and drums.

“Je Ne Sais Pas” features Bear as a jazz-blues contortionist, effortlessly vamping between the two styles without even trying. The bass and percussion flawlessly execute the Latin fringe to lend a certain exotic air.

Into The Blue positions Bear as a star on five original compositions and a complex unraveling of styles and references (John Coltrane!) in the classic cover of “My Favorite Things.”
